Titled after the 1985 film that earned him Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, Roberts’ memoir, *Runaway Train: Or, The Story of My Life So Far*, was released on Monday. In it, he reflects on their difficult childhood with their parents, Walter Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts describes his father as a “screwed-up individual” and shares how their parents’ divorce led him to live with his father while Julia stayed with their mother, who later remarried.

Roberts also revisits his early career successes, including *Runaway Train*, and how he turned down the role of Jesus in 1988’s *The Last Temptation of Christ*, missing a chance to work with legendary director Martin Scorsese. He details how his struggles with drug abuse, a serious car accident in 1981, and a resulting coma impacted his life and memory. Around this time, Julia Roberts' career took off, and her rise to stardom led to tension between the siblings, with Eric famously saying, "If it wasn't for me, there would be no Julia Roberts."

Now, Eric Roberts acknowledges that comment was wrong, writing, "I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said."

His addiction created difficulties in his relationships with both Julia and their half-sister, Nancy Motes. He admits his behavior was "dangerous to be around." The most significant consequence of his drug use, however, was losing custody of his daughter, Emma Roberts. The custody battle created a further rift with Julia, who sided with Emma’s mother, Kelly Cunningham. In hindsight, Roberts concedes that Julia was right to support Cunningham.

"I imagine I will remain as Julia's brother and Emma Roberts' dad for the rest of my life," he writes. "I'd like to make good on that, to step aside with pride and grace. That's part of why I wrote the book."

Earlier this year, during an appearance on the *Still Here Hollywood* podcast, Roberts revealed that he is unable to discuss his sister or daughter publicly. "I love my sister, but I can't talk about her," he said, noting that his daughter, Emma, had also asked him not to speak about her in interviews.

However, when asked about actors he admires, Roberts gushed about Emma's work: "I'm in love with my daughter's work these days. I can't believe how great she's become. I'm so proud of her I can't see straight."
