Live Updates: Tropical Storm Warning Issued for South Florida as Helene Strengthens into a Hurricane

**Helene Strengthens as it Nears Hurricane Status; Expected to Intensify Before Florida Landfall**

Helene is nearing hurricane strength and is expected to intensify rapidly upon reaching the Gulf of Mexico, potentially becoming a Category 3 storm before making landfall in Florida.

### Key Points to Know:

- **Tropical Storm Warning Issued**: Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties are under a tropical storm warning as of Wednesday.

- **Storm Formation**: Helene formed on Tuesday in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and became a hurricane on Wednesday.

- **Warnings Issued**: Hurricane watches and tropical storm warnings are now in effect for various parts of Florida.

- **Landfall Expected**: Helene is forecast to strengthen in the Gulf and may become a major hurricane before reaching Florida’s Gulf Coast late on Thursday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Helene will bring "life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds, and flooding rains" to parts of Florida and the Southeast.

### Emergency Preparations:

A state of emergency has been declared in Florida, with evacuations already underway in low-lying areas. Residents in the storm's projected path are being urged to prepare for the possibility of prolonged power outages.

"It's a big, big storm," said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis during a Wednesday briefing. "Many people will lose power, so be prepared."

### Storm Location and Path:

As of the latest advisory, Helene is located 85 miles east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico, and 500 miles south-southwest of Tampa, Florida, moving north-northwest at 10 mph. The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and is expected to intensify into a Category 3 hurricane with winds exceeding 111 mph before making landfall along Florida’s Big Bend region.

In addition to high winds, the storm could bring up to 12 inches of rainfall and tornadoes to the Gulf Coast. Heavy rain has already been reported in Cancun, Mexico, and is forecast to impact the western Caribbean, with the potential for mudslides and flooding across western Cuba.

The National Hurricane Center warns of "considerable flash and urban flooding" across Florida, the Southeast, the southern Appalachians, and the Tennessee Valley through Friday.

### Storm Surge and Flooding:

Life-threatening storm surge is a major concern along Florida's Gulf Coast. The storm surge warning covers the Florida Peninsula and Big Bend area, where residents are advised to follow evacuation orders.

### Florida’s Preparedness:

Governor DeSantis has extended the state of emergency to 61 counties as the storm approaches. The emergency declaration allows state resources to be mobilized for evacuation, rescue, and logistical efforts.

DeSantis urged residents to have a plan in place, know their evacuation zones, and prepare for the storm’s impact.

### Watches and Warnings:

- **Hurricane Warnings**: In effect from the Anclote River to Mexico Beach, Florida, and from Cabo Catoche to Tulum, Mexico.

- **Hurricane Watches**: Cover parts of Cuba, Tampa Bay, and Florida’s Gulf Coast.

- **Tropical Storm Warnings**: Issued for the Florida Keys, Tampa Bay, Dry Tortugas, and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

- **Storm Surge Watch**: In effect for areas from Indian Pass to Tampa Bay, with potential for life-threatening flooding.

### Federal Assistance:

President Biden approved Florida’s emergency declaration, authorizing FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate disaster relief efforts. Federal resources, including generators, food, water, and search-and-rescue teams, are being pre-positioned in affected areas.

White House spokesman Jeremy Edwards urged residents to stay vigilant and follow official guidance as the storm approaches.
